Centro Mixto de Investigación UDC – Navantia
Astillero 5.0. El Astillero del Futuro

Digital Worker

This action focuses on the investigation of new technologies for the assistance and support of assembly, maintenance and operator training operations. Specifically, the line will propose seven pilots that will make use of the latest Extended Reality technologies (i.e., Augmented/Mixed/Virtual Reality) and sensorization. These pilots will cover the following problems that currently affect Navantia's production units:

  • Guidance of the operators in the sequencing of assembly tasks. Specifically, Extended Reality devices will be used (e.g., smart glasses, tablets, smartphones) to project virtual content that allows operators to be guided intuitively through images, 3D designs, and animations, so that it can be removed from certain processes the use of the traditional manuals printed on paper or the access with computers to files with documentation.
  • Operator training. It will deal with the analysis and development of Extended Reality applications that enable the training of new workers or operators who need to learn how to use certain new machinery or personnel who need to learn how to perform equipment maintenance procedures.
  • Extended remote assistance. Extended Reality tools will be developed and validated to facilitate the remote resolution of incidents, which can be documented using video/photos/audio and can be expedited through the guidance of operators "on site" through virtual elements superimposed on the real objects to which each incident is related.
  • Sensorization for the creation of Tools 5.0. Advanced sensorization will be incorporated into the equipment available in the workshops, so that the data collected by such sensors serve as a basis for learning and future decision-making.
  • Monitoring the progress of tasks. The possibility of using Extended Reality systems to check construction progress will be analyzed and verified, automatically comparing real progress against the reference model.
  • Monitoring of the health of operators for Occupational Risk Prevention (ORP) through the use of sensors and disruptive technologies.
